BROOKLYN (June 16, 2025) — Higher Heights for America, a national organization dedicated to expanding Black women’s political participation and elected representation, is proud to announce its endorsement of Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield for Mayor of Detroit. As a lifelong Detroiter and trailblazing leader, Sheffield embodies the power of Black women’s leadership. She is bold, community rooted, and unapologetically committed to justice, equity, and accountability for all.

Since her historic election in 2013 as the youngest member of the Detroit City Council, and later its youngest-ever president, Sheffield has remained steadfast in her advocacy for policies that directly improve the lives of Detroiters. Her leadership has driven forward transformative efforts including Inclusionary Housing, Property Tax Reform, the Right to Counsel ordinance, and the Neighborhood Beautification Program.

“Mary Sheffield is exactly the kind of leader Higher Heights was created to uplift,” said Eboni Taylor, Vice President of Programs at Higher Heights and a proud native of Detroit. “She leads with vision, values, and a fierce dedication to her community. Her lived experience, legislative accomplishments, and deep roots in Detroit are a powerful reflection of what Black women’s leadership looks like at its best. We’re proud to stand with her as she works to move Detroit forward.”

Higher Heights for America is committed to building Black women’s political power and leadership, and we are proud to stand with Council President Mary Sheffield as she continues her dedicated service to the people of Detroit.
