Sheryl Cole, as Mayor Pro Tem and the first African American woman elected to City Council in Austin, Texas led a coalition of community advocacy and service groups to place a new affordable housing package on the ballot to address affordability issues and mounting economic and racial divides. Austin voters passed the bond package with 61% of the vote. An accountant and attorney by training, Cole began her public life working with her local PTA and organizing community support for schools. She’s also advocated for marriage equality, wage disparities among women and minorities. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards and she continues to serve on several boards.
