Val Demings served for nearly three decades in multiple roles in the Orlando Police Department, including commander of special operations from 2003 to 2006. In 2007, she was appointed Orlando’s chief of police, becoming the first woman to hold that title. She served in that role for five years. She received a B.S. in criminology from Florida State University, and earned her MPA from Webster University in 1996. After graduating from college, Demings started her career as a social worker. In the early 1980s, she graduated from the police academy where she was selected as class president.
