North Carolina House of Representatives District 29

Vernetta Alston’s professional experience includes working as a staff attorney for North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services and the Center for Death Penalty Litigation. Those roles led to her fighting for the constitutional rights of death row inmates and educating North Carolinians about flaws in the criminal justice system. Through her work with the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission, Alston saw one of her clients, then the longest-serving death-row inmate in North Carolina history, exonerated and released from prison. Before her appointment to the North Carolina House of Representatives on April 13, 2020, Alston was a member of the Durham, N.C. City Council.
