Sandra Williams represents Ohio’s 21st State Senate district, which includes 12 of the City of Cleveland’s 17 wards, Bratenahl, Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Shaker Heights, Garfield Heights, and Newburgh Heights.

Sandra is a native Clevelander who grew up in the Union-Miles and Buckeye neighborhoods. She is the youngest of seven children and a graduate of John Hay High School. She worked full-time while earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Cleveland State University and went on to earn a Master’s in Criminal Justice Administration from Tiffin University.

Sandra has spent more than three decades in public service. She served for eight years in the United States Army’s reserve component and was honorably discharged in 1995.

Sandra served as a corrections officer, a probation and parole officer, a mediator for the State of Ohio, and a legislative aide in the Ohio Statehouse. Like her father, she was a member of the United Auto Workers. In 2006, she was elected for the first time to the Ohio House of Representatives. She was elected to the Ohio Senate in 2014 and is currently serving her second term.

Sandra strongly believes in the self-sufficiency and self-determination that comes from having a job, and Cleveland’s businesses have to succeed to provide Clevelanders with the jobs they need. To better understand business and its needs, soon after being elected to the Statehouse, Sandra pursued an Executive MBA from Cleveland State and has made a point of seeking assignments on committees that address business concerns.

In addition to her two Master’s degrees, Sandra received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Tiffin University and is an Associate Professor at Cleveland State University. She has previously served as President of the Ohio Black Legislative Caucus and the Vice Chairwoman of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party. She is a member of the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus, NAACP, Black Women’s Political Action Committee, and the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World.
