Higher Heights Applauds Kamala Harris on a Hard-fought Race

Now is the Time to Continue the Fight to Elect Black Women to Public Office at all Levels

NEW YORK (Dec. 3, 2019) — Higher Heights for America PAC, the only national political action committee exclusively dedicated to electing Black women, applauds our endorsed candidate, Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), for her hard-fought race to be the next president of the United States. Harris announced today that she has suspended her campaign. 

Higher Heights for America PAC President and CEO Glynda C.Carr issued the following statement:

“Higher Heights applauds Senator Kamala Harris and her team on her race. Senator Harris made her bid for the country’s highest office nearly 50 years after Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm became the first woman and the first African American to seek the Democratic Party nomination. Her presidential campaign put her among the early front runners and showed she possessed the experience and leadership skills needed to be president.

Senator Harris raised issues, such as healthcare and equal pay during her candidacy that resonated with women of color, particularly Black women. Her voice will be missed on the road to 2020. However, she will remain a strong voice on the national stage as we enter the impeachment hearings in the Senate. 

Today reminds us that Black women running for office face many unique challenges. Senator Harris’ “For the People” Campaign, certainly helped clear the path for other women running at all levels in 2020 and beyond. 

Senator Harris continues to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to Black women’s leadership, working in support of our mission to elect more Black women and to help create the environment for Black women to run, win and lead. This work will continue with even more focus and intent in large part because her candidacy. “
