NEW YORK (Jan. 24, 2020)– Higher Heights for America PAC, the only political action committee exclusively dedicated to electing more progressive Black women at all levels, announces the endorsement of Maya Rockeymoore Cummings to represent Maryland’s 7th Congressional District.

Rockeymoore Cummings has fought for those who have been historically left out of our nation’s wealth and prosperity. In her roles as a legislative aide on Capitol Hill, at the National Urban League, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Rockeymoore Cummings worked to address disparities in health care, especially for communities of color and Black women; advocated for our children’s health and wellbeing across the country; and led the fight to push back against President George W. Bush’s efforts to privatize Social Security.

Rockeymoore Cummings most recently served as the Maryland Democratic Party Chairwoman and she is the widow of U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, who leaves behind an incredible legacy of fighting for Baltimore. She said she felt privileged to have “fought the good fight,” with her late husband on a variety of issues, and that she wants to continue her husband’s fight for “the soul” of American democracy.

“Maya is our selection because she seeks to be a voice for the voiceless and marginalized. She has been endorsed by Higher Heights because she has demonstrated that she is a champion for the issues that impact women and we need more voices like hers in the halls of Congress,” said Glynda C. Carr, President and CEO, of Higher Heights. “We look forward to working hard to make sure the nation sees how Black women lead when she is sworn into office. She represents the possibilities that exist to change the face of leadership in our country.”

In 2017, Rockeymoore Cummings  launched her campaign for Governor, running in part on a platform of protecting health care for Marylanders from Republican efforts in Washington to repeal the Affordable Care Act and overhaul the nation’s health care system. She dropped out of the race in January 2018 to help her late husband Congressman Elijah Cummings recover from health issues.

Higher Heights for America PAC strongly encourages its members to support Rockeymoore Cummings’s campaign with their time, talent and resources. We know there is strength in our numbers, and when mobilized, Black women can and do make the difference in elections.
